UK Soap Character Billy Mitchell on Eastenders

Soap: Eastenders

Character Name: Billy Mitchell

Actor Name: Perry Fenwick

UK Soap character Billy Mitchell first stumbled on to Albert Square 11 years ago in 1998. In this episode, Phil Mitchell – his thug cousin – visited Billy and his nephew Jamie. Although this was his first scene on UK soap TV show Eastenders, Billy didn’t appear again on screen until August 2nd of the following year. During his visit, Phil noticed nephew Jamie looking subdued and abused, and it soon surfaced that Billy was beating his young teenage nephew. Billy was actually in fact scripted to appear in just four episodes, but towards the end of 1999, it seemed that UK soap tv show Eastenders’ script writers had decided to use him as a recurring character. “I was offered four episodes and here I am, about 800 later” Perry said “Ross Kemp said that he was leaving, and there was a gap in the Mitchell family, so they brought me back to do stuff towards his leaving. After that they offered me a year”.

During Billy’s first Eastenders episodes, he was utterly hated by viewers but within a year, it seemed Billy was a changed man and he soon met Honey Edwards, an innocent and somewhat comedic soap character and fans immediately warmed to him. Shortly after marrying, Billy and Honey had a child named Janet who was born with down-syndrome. Regardless of Honey rejecting the baby, Billy had never been prouder. Perry admitted he was worried about filming the scenes following Janet’s birth, telling the BBC “we wanted to get our reactions right. It was very difficult to film, but satisfying to do.” Honey and Billy eventually divorced after Billy’s past behaviour crept up on him and he stole. He is pulling pints and living at the Vic – the Square’s pub. Perry recently summed up his soap tv character in one sentence and fans will no doubt agree his description is spot on! “He’s the sort of bloke who would win the lottery and lose the ticket.”

Eastenders Soap TV Episode Review

Eastenders is brimming with separate juicy story lines at the moment. With Heather’s mystery baby and Christian and Syed’s love affair, this London based soap opera is set to get even more juicy over the next few weeks.

The question on everybody’s mind for the past few weeks has been regarding Eastenders soap tv characters Heather and her recently acquired baby bump. When Heather Trott revealed to the square that she was pregnant, viewers and residents alike have been speculating as to who the father is. Heather has only recently divorced from Minty – a couple married in aid of a competition. Although Minty and Heather’s marriage was purely for money and a holiday, the pair did eventually admit their shared like for each other and viewers immediately assumed the father was Minty.

After being questioned by their divorce lawyers, it became crystal clear that the father could not be Minty as the pair had never slept together. Now, Heather’s best friend Shirley is among a hoard of people interested to know who is fathering her baby bump. Could it be a one night stand with a stranger in R&R some weeks ago, or could it be Garry, Minty’s best friend? There have even been soap gossip speculations stating that it could even be IVF – a desperate move made by Heather to trap Minty, but was just too late.

Meanwhile, viewers stared in shock when Muslim 20something Syed kissed openly gay Christian. The pair embarked on an affair whilst Syed’s fiancé Amira, arranged wedding plans. Now the wedding is just around the corner and Christian is at rock bottom. Picking up a random man in the Vic, Christian got more than he bargained for when the stranger turned out to be a violent thug and beat Christian out cold. Fans are now wondering if Amira and Syed will tie the knot and whether a struggling Christian will reveal all before they make it down the aisle.

In a couple of days, viewers will see soapy character Zara – currently struggling with strong symptoms of the menopause – putting aside her own worries and visiting a family struggling just as much as her. Viewers will see character Ray MacGuyver walking home from a night in the cells – he was put in temporary jail for drinking and fighting. He returns home to a caravan to his wife and it seems fighting and drinking is his reaction to his wife Zara’s recent diagnosis of cancer. Zara, later on in the day, visits the couple to check up on her patient Brenda – Ray’s wife. When asked how she is finding her treatment, Brenda reveals to Zara that she has put a stop to her treatment. She tells Zara she is aware she doesn’t have much time left so has seized using it unbeknown to husband Ray – she doesn’t want him to know as he is visibly struggling with the situation as it stands already.

Zara soon gets further involved with the MacGuyver family as Brenda and Ray’s teenage daughter arrives, clearly pregnant. Zara notices that Ray and his daughter do not get on as Ray has an extreme disliking towards her boyfriend Everton who is black. When Ray walks in, he demands to know why Zara has dropped by and Brenda reveals to him that she has stopped the treatment – he is distraught and storms off.

Hollyoaks Gerard McCarthy Soap Star

Soap: Hollyoaks

Character Name: Kris Fisher

Kris was faced with dealing with the news that his brother Malachy, was HIV positive, which was obviously hard to deal with. The pair are really close and actor Gerard McCarthy believes since Malachy appeared on the scene, his character Kris has been more relaxed and somewhat complete. “You see the real side of Kris when Malachy’s around, as opposed to the ‘performance’ he puts on with others” Gerard said, and he truly is right.

Gerard McCarthy who has been playing Kris Fisher on Hollyoaks soap tv show since 2006 started acting professionally in 2002 when he attended Laine Theatre Arts school and shortly after joining, he landed a part in award winning west end musical Mamma Mia! He then joined Hollyoaks, appearing in his first scene as a student in a new university class. Tonight’s Hollyoaks E4 episode was a mix of laughter, love and scandal and the episode kicked off with soap star character Ste returning to Abi and Daniel’s flat with his tail between his legs. It seems sneaky Daniel paid Gilly to call off renting his spare flat out to Ste and his child, Lucas, unbeknown to poor trusting Ste. When a clearly mentally unstable Abi offers to look after Lucas, boyfriend Daniel seems utterly bemused, fearing Abi is getting too close to baby Lucas once again.

Hollyoaks soapy writers are fantastic at throwing light hearted comedy into the mix and did so in this episode in the shape of the graduates; Sarah, Zoe, Zak and Kris, and the gang meet at MOBS where Sarah announces she has a job at a call centre. Kris tells her he turned the same job down this morning. Shortly after this announcement, Zoe and Zak’s phones ring – it’s the same agency recruiting them and the group burst into laughter agreeing to work there together.

When arriving at their new jobs they’re faced with a test. An amused Kris takes great pleasure in irritating the boss and is shocked to hear he scored the highest. A deflated Sarah discovers she failed the test and therefore, cannot start work!

Meanwhile, innocent soap TV character Spencer fires the builders hired to work on his dead brother’s club after hearing Malachy slag off their ethics. Spencer hires a confused Calvin and Malachy to work on it themselves, whilst hiring an ecstatic Carmel to start work at Evissa!

Whilst the rest of the nation struggle to find jobs, it seems the Hollyoaks soapy gang are landing them left right and centre – but how long before something goes wrong at the ruins of dead Warren Fox’s somewhat tainted club?

The phrase “soap opera” orginiated in the USA almost 80 years ago, and was used to label radio series that were sponsored by soap powders. This is where the word “soap” came from. The “opera” part of this household phrase is more self explanatory as all of these shows were based around soap star scandals and slightly unrealistic dilemmas.

In 1950, filmed versions of these popular radio shows made their way onto television and almost immediately, the popularity of soap operas sky rocketed and one soap opera that took the world by storm was “Dallas”, an American series that launched in 1978. Revolving around the Ewing family in Southfork, Dallas reached its height of popularity with its “Who shot JR Ewing?” whodunnit storyline.

Coronation Street, a UK soap based on the lives of the residents of the street itself was recently reported to be the “most watched show on British television”. Coronation Street began in 1960 and character Ken Barlow is one of the longest standing characters of the show. Ken Barlow’s character appeared in the very first episode of Corrie and he is still very much a main character today.

Soap Operas are now a large part of British television, and with more soaps addressing more serious every day issues, it’s clear to see that Soap Opera fans aren’t planning on switching off anytime soon.
