UK Soap Character Profile: Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb)

Soap: Emmerdale

Character Name:
Debbie Dingle

Actor Name: Charley Webb

UK soap character Debbie Dingle has been acting in village soap drama Emmerdale since 2002 when she first appeared on Christmas Eve as the foster child of Paddy and Emily Kirk.

Although she was sent back home for 2 weeks, she returned back to Paddy and Kirk as her mother had fallen into a coma after drinking too much. It was soon revealed that Debbie was actually the daughter of village villain Cain Dingle and his partner Charity and she was soon living with them.

Since being launched full time into the show, Debbie Dingle has had a mass of dramatic story lines including pregnancy, dodgy dealings, helping rid of a dead body and going to jail, but actress 21 year old Charley Webb admits she loves playing Debbie and has come across many professional challenges whilst playing her.

“Debbie’s a great character. I remember when I was taken into the producers to talk about the story line when she was pregnant” she told OK magazine “Obviously I was quite young at the time and I was going to have to give birth on screen, which is a big thing to take on”.

Outside of Emmerdale, Charley has posed for many magazines, and has become quite the icon but Charley admits she does what she can to try and keep her life simple and out of the public eye, unlike her character Debbie’s! Charley claims she thinks it’s important to have a personal life and to draw a line between reality and fame.

Debbie Dingle is set to come across an array of obstacles in the next few months as Dad Cain has returned and her mother Charity isn’t far behind him….

UK Soap Opera and Soap Star History

Soap Operas are among some of most watched shows on British and US television – with the recent elevation in television channels, these days, regardless of the day or time, you can always find a soap episode to sink your teeth into.

The phrase “soap opera” orginiated in the USA almost 80 years ago, and was used to label radio series that were sponsored by soap powders. This is where the word “soap” came from. The “opera” part of this household phrase is more self explanatory as all of these shows were based around soap star scandals and slightly unrealistic dilemmas.

In 1950, filmed versions of these popular radio shows made their way onto television and almost immediately, the popularity of soap operas sky rocketed and one soap opera that took the world by storm was “Dallas”, an American series that launched in 1978. Revolving around the Ewing family in Southfork, Dallas reached its height of popularity with its “Who shot JR Ewing?” whodunnit storyline.

Coronation Street, a UK soap based on the lives of the residents of the street itself was recently reported to be the “most watched show on British television”. Coronation Street began in 1960 and character Ken Barlow is one of the longest standing characters of the show. Ken Barlow’s character appeared in the very first episode of Corrie and he is still very much a main character today.

Soap Operas are now a large part of British television, and with more soaps addressing more serious every day issues, it’s clear to see that Soap Opera fans aren’t planning on switching off anytime soon. Soap Star fans can also catch up with soap news and soap gossip when they play soap star bingo, combining the fun game of bingo with their love of soaps.

At the end of May 2009, Lily Allen revealed that soap opera Neighbours’ bosses approached her and offered her a cameo appearance in the show that will be shown later on in the year. The British Pop star is said to have wasted no time in accepting the television appearance as she is a massive fan of the soap and has been for years.

Allen has very recently completed filming for her cameo soap star role and it is rumoured that the scene is centred round Lily (as herself) and Matt Werkmiester who plays teenager Zeke. Before filming took place, Matt posted an amusing statement onto the official Neighbours soap website saying “I’m freaking out. I will be star struck for sure but I will try my hardest to stay professional”.

Leading up to the day of filming, Allen was said to be ecstatic that she was getting to fulfil a lifelong dream and it seems it wasn’t just Lily that felt this way. Before filming, executive producer Susan Bower said that over 15 cast members had approached her and volunteered to be in a scene with Lily and actors had even stayed behind after their own scenes had finished to watch Lily in action.

The Neighbours scene is rumoured to begin with 17 year old Zeke DJing at a private station when Lily Allen walks in and performs an acoustic version of a song from her brand new album, It’s Not me, It’s You.

The soap opera scene will be shown on Australian screens in September, but the UK have yet to be given scheduled airing date. If you can’t wait for more Neighbours soap drama, play soap bingo online and discover how much fun combining your favourite soap and bingo can be!
